Close to the Property you will find numerous cafes and restaurants serving both Spanish and Continental foods. In Maspalomas try the Lighthouse area and FARO2 for some lively and interesting eateries. In Playa del Ingles, you'll be literally spoilt for choice with every type of restaurant catering for all tastes. The Yumbo Centre is one of the areas with a wide choice at reasonable prices.
You will arrive at Las Palmas Airport (LPA) on the East coast of
the island. The airport is modern and comfortable and all services are available from taxis, buses, shuttle transfers, car hire and luggage hold. There are shops and restaurants although outside the departure/ arrival area - these tend to be a little on the expensive side. There are help points and Tourist Information offices available after clearing customs and currency exchanges (although you would be much better off exchanging your money, at at Bank or in resort where rates are better.
Taxis are abundant outside the airport 24 hours and day, 365 days per year. The official taxis are marked with the Gran Canaria Royal Crest on the drivers door and are either red roofed or green roofed. Please ensure that you take an Official Taxi only and be sure to get a quote before you start the journey - all Official taxis are with meter. There are some unofficial taxis still operating and should be avoided, although the authorities have reduced this problem in the last few years. As at JULY 2010, Taxis will cost about 50 euros to resort, one way, although if you pre-book using our links opposite, you will pay approximately 65-70 euros return.
If you are considering hiring a car, it may be worth your while booking a car hire company in advance using our links (right). If you use Record-Go Car rental, any taxi from the airport will take you to their collection point about 3 miles away, which could save you time and money. Picking up your car at the airport is more expensive and you could be waiting a while in lengthy queues. Just a suggestion! Car hire rates for a small car for 3-4 adults range from 110 euros to 150 euros depending on the season. Petrol is cheaper than the UK, by on average 20 - 25%. Diesel is even cheaper at current time. January 2009.
Bus Service No.66 runs from the airport direct to Maspalomas. You should take this service to the 'FARO 2' Shopping Centre in Maspalomas and then take a cab for the last part of the journey to the accommodation. The bus fare is currently 3.70 euros per person one way and the taxi will cost about 3 euros extra. The bus takes 55 minutes and leaves the airport at 20 minutes past each hour between 07.20 and 22.20 hrs daily. Some fluctuations on holiday days and Christmas Period. Leaving FARO 2' at 15 mins past each hour from 06.15 and 20.15 daily. You can download the timetable by clicking here.
Finally, remember your Passport before departure and all your travel and Insurance documentation. You will need a FULL DRIVING LICENSE to hire a Car and be above 21 years old to drive in Gran Canaria. You will need both parts of your License, paper and card! Please ensure that you take all necessary documents with you for your arrival at the Property including your Confirmation receipt and Agent contact number. We ask you to contact the agent on arrival at the airport.
The local currency is the Euro as in mainland Spain.
Currently the rate is 1.19 Euros (JULY10) to the £ Sterling, however, please remember that you may receive less than this in local currency exchanges in Gran Canaria or indeed if you exchange Travellers Cheques. Always take Euro Travellers Cheques or better still, it may be cheaper to withdraw using a Debit Card at one of many ATM Machines displaying the Maestro/Visa.
Be aware that ATM's in Spain are allowed to ask if you require the currency to be exchanged into Sterling on withdrawl. This may seem convenient, however, you will be charged for this service by upto 2.5% per transaction. It is best to request the withdrawl in Euros and not to ask for the currency to be exchanged at the ATM!!
